En el siglo XVI Isabel I fue coronada reina de Inglaterra. Su Majestad era una enamorada de las galletas de jengibre tradicionales, así que tuvo la ocurrencia de hacer un concurso para buscar al mejor pastelero de todo el mundo, sólo había una norma, quien participara, tenía que usar obligatoriamente la receta tradicional de Pan de Jengibre del siglo XV. Entre todos los participantes había un pastelero que mostraba en su carta de presentación un hombrecito hecho de galleta de jengibre aquella idea le hizo ganador. Aquel año como obsequio a los asistentes al tradicional Baile de Navidad la Reina regalaría una galleta de jengibre similar al invitado que la recibía. Pero no pudo ser, los diarios de aquella época hablan de un incendio provocado en las cocinas de palacio que se extendió hasta los salones de baile. Se desalojó a todo el mundo que había en palacio. Desgraciadamente hubo muchos heridos, pero ningún muerto. El fuego se pudo controlar rápidamente y por tanto no se sufrieron pérdidas materiales importantes. Ese mismo día la Reina decretó una ley que castigaba a todo aquel que horneara hombrecillos de pan de jengibre. Aun hoy en día es una tradición dejar galletas de hombrecito de pan de jengibre con un vaso de leche caliente para el Papa Nöel.
